Best Montages in the past 5 years?

During my hiatus, i didn't watch a single montage. If you had to give me the 5 best montages you've seen in the past 5 years what would they be? What's the flavor these days?

Id say just check the semifinals of the last montage comp

and check Hyena's Mastery and everything else he's done

to get started that should do

id check out some of hustla's stuff and the lit vid that blackhawk edited. hyena's stuff is always dope. zhestal, puba, etc have some really good edits. stormys stuff is insane, theres a bunch of good material floating around, but thats off the top of my head

Thank you. I actually watched Mastery 2 days ago. Love Hyena.

You missed 5 full years? That's around the time Detour 2, Wezlet's H3M1 and PoisonousSlinky's Final came out. I seriously doubt you haven't seen any of the ones I'm posting, but if you haven't you've missed a lot of good content.

I'll get some of the more obvious watches out of the way first:

All of Phurion's best moments from Halo 3, packed into a neat little package. Vibrant and stylish if I had to describe it in 2 words.

Crazy fucking gameplay, and Puba's best editing to date. The second of Dutchy's three final montages (it really means nothing anymore does it?).

Actually a very recent release, but this is an instant classic. Dlongo hasn't done much of anything except save up for this one video, and his gameplay is some of the strongest you'll see. Ever. Zhestal can't be beat either; he is someone you probably don't know, but should get very caught up with. Best editor in the game imo.

Halo tricks taken to the absolute maximum, one of many great works from the tricking/jumping community, but it may very well be the best.

This has become a classic montage to look for when you want MLG gameplay from Halo 3. If you haven't seen it yet, you should have a great time with it.

It's not what Axilo and McGee wanted, but overlooking some of Fuzon's strange quirks; this is one of the happiest, most colorful experiences you'll have with Halo montages. It's a fantastic video, featuring one of THE BEST Halo 3 clips of all time. You'll know it when you see it.

Zhestal again, blowing us away with his style and elegance. He really does something to montages that can't be replicated properly; he has a very distinct style that he follows and you can see it in every one of his videos. Toastyame also brought some insane gameplay to the table, and it was a solid contender in the last competition we held.

Can't believe you might have missed this, but it came out less than 5 years ago. Atiemark is a master of 3D, but in this he also shows that he is a creative genius when it comes to all things editing wise. I almost overlooked it because it is a staple that can't be moved.

This is very recent, but holy fuck, prepare to have your mind blown. What Trev does to Halo 3 is beyond anything you could imagine; he beats the system. He really just knocks it dead on the ground, and says "fuck your rules". Watch it.

If you want something other than Halo 3 (my bias is strong in this post), you should check this out. MLG gameplay from Halo: Reach, but Lethul & Formal, two pro's that are still competing to this day (even though Formal plays CoD now). I haven't watched it in a long time because of the length, but it's incredible how solid Muggsy and CJ's editing is all the way through. I can't speak on the gameplay, but it should also be very good throughout the entirety of the video.

(^I was going to put this in spoilers, but I can't be bothered to do it all again.^)

And here's a grab bag of goodness. There's just a lot of everything in here, but every single one of these videos deserve to be watched.

People already said Mastery which is a must.

damn Marskman went off, respect.

Thanks for the help and effort! I'll give them a watch and report back.

Marksman pretty much listed everything I was thinking of lol. Pretty much anything Muggsy, FatRat, and Hyena have made is worth a watch.

Some other great videos include (my favourites anyways):

I think Chimp's All the Gold 2 and my final montage are pretty good when it comes to Reach MLG gameplay as well.

Well, let's see. I agree with most things others have said, but I do see a few things I feel have been missed...

Salaya's Reach M3 has super cool trick plays. That's about all I can remember so it might be time for me to give it another watch myself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJWAjcJcgPw

Russo's montage definitely deserves a watch imo. An awesome mix of MLG and social. One of my favorite Reach MLG tages just because his snper is so unique and it was one of few pro montages I could actually get through.

I gotta throw my boy Sucky some love. He did an awesome edit on Jumpify's mix of MLG and snipes on this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLKp2D1d6CA

No one likes H4 at all, but if you want to give it a chance I'd recommend Pichufrenzy's H4 montage. Super fun, super social, and super unique. No other player took advantage of H4's modes in the same way Pichu did with this. Best H4 tage to date imo

I love prime

I recommend checking this out

Cinema was pretty good too. It was Phurion and Rhis if I'm not mistaken. Sillygoose is great.

A few must-watches that haven't been posted yet (all Halo 2):

Immortal Pt. 3: GP and Edit - sk0ls

Chasing Shadows: GP - Blazin / Edit - Halzred

Awesome post marksman, went on a montage binge

Think i saw this one. this was a month or two before my hiatus.

EDIT: a YEAR and a month or two before.

I wonder whose fingerprints those actually are...

On the real though, I hadn't seen this either. Really enjoyed the song and relaxed edit. I'm playing around with no-HUD + CC combinations so it's nice to see examples like these being pulled off well.

Long day. Time to continue watching. Will edit this post with more remarks on each one like i did on the post above.

Edit: You all are awesome.

Started a critique on Dlongo. This is mainly for personal interest, but i think these are pretty good so far and would like to share my thoughts. Can't believe i made a custom gif.

[This is me writing down every thought i have while watching]

Dlongo H3M -

  • LOVED the first 50 seconds. Those transitions were great. My personal editing style is to focus heavy on syncing and transitions so this hit home with me. The second logo was a bit too long. Could have been 5 seconds instead of 10. Never understood why some 'Intro' logos people make have to show every angel of the 3D model even though we can't tell what it is at all until the final 3 seconds of the 10 second clip.
  • It's starting to feel like I've watched multiple montages in the same video; they just have the same color grading. After each song we get a pause, black screen, and then a new song starts and another chapter montage begins. Each part starts and ends with a few cinematic shots (the theater usage in this montage is great) then turns to the gameplay the exact same way the previous part happened. When a montage is over 10 minutes, i think one needs to try their best to make it seem like it's a 5 minute montage; by the end you want people not to have wanted it to end. You don't want people checking to see how much time is left unless their checking it because they don't want it to end. The pace of this montage is like this - starts in the lowest of valleys, ends on the highest peak. Now this isn't bad. Every montage needs peeks and vallies. We can't be always way high up there or always down. However, in this case, it's too drastic and too regular. All of this i just described is the FLOW of the montage. HERE is a custom gif i made explaining the flow. This is what it should look more like. Let the flow be like water, baby.
  • The transitions are still great, but each clip seems so rushed at certain points- too many cuts. Sometimes, for a brief moment, it's hard to tell if it's the same clip or a new one. Thus, it's really hard to focus on the gameplay. Which is why most people watch montages. (even though i focus on the editing)
  • Update: THANK YOU  Lana Del Rey for slowing our pace down and ending with a nice flow through the song. Good ending. Glad that song was last, it relaxed us down.
  • TLDR; I really enjoyed this. One of the best I've watched so far. Transitions and syncs were great. The flow was off. It felt like watching a few montages in one video rather than all one montage. This is the flow of the montage. Great use of theater. Sometimes cuts away from clips too soon (hard to tell what happened for a brief moment.

Phurion FH3M -

  • Good pace for the amount of clips he had.  Felt like we got through the first half in 3 minutes; this can be good, but in this case it almost felt like i was being rushed through the video to get to the second half and couldn't really enjoy each moment without a rewind or two.
  • The second half started off nice, but then it just felt like the editing got in the way of the gameplay from 7:28 to about 8:01 which shouldn't' happen in a Phurion montage cause his clips are so nice. (The pit ninjas and that headshot overkill on construct at the end were really nice). Anyways, i enjoyed it. I do have to say that song at the end nearly tilted me. Also, i forgot Phurion played on 11/10 sensitivity.
  • *may need to rewatch and give a better analysis*

Dutchy 4&F -

  • Good job, boys. Really enjoyed it. I must say though, there was a bit too much screen flicker herehereherehere, quickly herehere, herehereherehereherethis one was actually really nice, here, and the finale. Though i  have used it once in one of my montages before here. Sometimes seems necessary when there is a dull moment in a clip.
  • Great colors.
  • *may need to rewatch and give a better analysis*

Trevx64's FH3M -

  • Obviously awesome, unique gameplay. I won't comment on the editing simply because i know it wasn't the focus of the montage and that's perfectly fine. I really enjoyed this. It was a welcome break from all the other montages and that's not taking anything away from this one.
  • Music was picked well for the mood of the montage. Upbeat. Saving one of the best clips for last is always a good choice.

Jumpify: Overture - H3M -

  • Alright, this is the last and final talk about flow, but i feel it must be done. The first song is perfect; it's just long enough and it's slow pace really lets you play around with your clips. This is the perfect time to mess around in theater mode and really add some interesting cinematic shots in between the actual gameplay (which i wish there was more of). I bet if we gave this song to zhestaL we might get a masterpiece (if the following song had a more uplifting beat for the climax). The reason the first song was the perfect length was literally 25 seconds before the song switch i thought to myself "getting a bit boring now. I really hope he switches up the flow and hits us with a new faster paced song to really let the climax of the montage hit" and all of the sudden this happened. When the song started i literally said "YES" out loud, but sadly we were given more of the same. However, the transition between the songs was really good. It didn't like the usual announcement "hey! here comes a new song!" The timing was good and it had a similar sound to the first song so we weren't taken aback. Idealy, you shouldn't want to notice the music change at all.
  • Overall, i really enjoyed this even though i may have fallen slightly bored by the slower music.

Hyena: Mastery

  • <3

FatRat : H3M3

  • <3.
  • The gameplay after that brief pause, though. what. o.0 - Perfect flow. Music was perfect. Here is another one of my custom charts with how the music is in the video and how it should be here. Only complaint i have is the song transition here. Which isn't always a bad thing when you change a song like that, it's just so drastically different from the one before.
That's awesome, glad to see that you're giving them all a solid run-through. If you have to skip over any of the ones I posted that's cool, I posted 30 different montages and most run up to 10 minutes in length. Just pick and choose if it's overwhelming, but definitely keep sharing your thoughts on them!

Just wanna post my 2 biggest inspirations:

This is also one of the best H4 tages imo:

Thanks! I think every montage that is considered one of the best in the last 5 years deserve a good, thorough analysis. I enjoy it. I haven't finished Dlongo yet (about 7 1/2 minutes into it, so there might be one more paragraph). I'll have to make a mega post here when i finish them all. It may take a few weeks. I'll finish up Dlongo later today.

One of the best videos to ever come out and my personal favorite reach video to ever come out is Diesel's M2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QgJf6MQ59U

Valient I really, really like how you critique video's. Seeing the big amount of video's you've been provided with so far I get why you don't want to go as in-depth on each and every one. But seriously, kudo's to you.

A lot of true gems in this thread as well. I dig.

Really appreciate it, man. Thank you! I'm sure i'll have an urge to start back up sometime soon. Took me over an hour to watch and critique Dlongo. I felt inspired to just go for it on that one. Just hard to go that far on them all!

Curious to see your review of Remission now after reading the other ones. I miss the days where people on the forum actually took the time to critique and give feedback on montages.

I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video and giving an in-depth review like that.  I agree with a lot of what you said.  I really wish I was exposed to a lot more of these posts, they're more appreciated than simple "good job's".

A lot of the others have really shared the best videos to have come out the last 5 years, but these are worth checking out too:

awh man true shot m3 takes me back, he was a beast and villain's editing was perfect in that video.

A few that haven't been mentioned which i can remember enjoying thoroughly; All of these are up there amongst my favorite videos ever but the actual list is too long and poorly remembered to be able to order it. h3 4 lyfe

I'm really happy you found it appreciative. Can't wait for another one of your montages. I'm now a fan. I've watched that first 50 seconds of your montage like 15 times just because i like it so much.
r fucking t. All I seem to hear is "good job!" or a simple one sentence on why someone didn't enjoy it. I've always found the point of forums like THF to be more indepth feedback. Valiant is doing something that we all should be. It's always a good thing when I can read the same thread for 10 minutes, and that's without watching any of the absolute gem montages that have been pasted in here. I'm all about detailed analysis, which seems to be a rarity these days. Here's to continuing intelligent constructive feedback on THF inspiring us to get more involved and continue to make great videos.
Cheers. Here's to hoping we get some outstanding, incredible, inspirational, mind blowing 2016 competition entires.
