With Halo: The Master Chief Collection being released many people are revisiting Halo 1 and 2, especially Halo 2 being a game where button glitches are central to play. Below is a written breakdown of H2 button glitches by button glitch master @xXBlazin187Xx , a Video Walkthrough of those glitches with Controller Cam by another button glitch specialist @sk0ls with help from @TeZiMa as well as a to the point Halo 1 glitch explanation by H1 Montager @NickV , also known as MuFf1n.

Halo 2 Button Glitching

The following is a guide intended for those who are new to Halo 2 Classic and/or new to button glitching. For the purpose of this guide, it is assumed that you are using a Battle Rifle (BR) and playing on Default button layout. So B=Melee, X=Reload and R=Shoot.

If you are a new player and this looks like a lot of information all at once, just take it one step at a time. This stuff gets to be second nature and is hugely beneficial to the game competitively. I listed these in the order I would recommend you learning.

It is not necessary for you to play claw in order for you to successfully pull off any of these button glitches. Once mastered, claw makes all of these a lot easier to pull off consistently. Mastering claw is the hard part. In most cases, harder than doing the combos in the first place. That being said, if you can get good with it, you’re better off with it, than without it.

BXR:
  1. Melee. Wait until you see their shields break, as soon as you do:
  2. Hit X and R at the same time as fast as possible.

Notes:

  • You must have a full clip to pull off this combo.
  • In most cases you will need a headshot in order to get an instant kill.
  • You can think of the X button as the “cancel” button. It is cancelling the time it takes for your Spartan to melee and return to his original position, so that you may shoot your BR sooner than normal.
  • Due to this fact above, if you press X too soon after B, you could cancel your melee before it strikes your opponent.
  • If you perform this while off host, you will get an auto-reload. This means you can continue shooting and your BR will still be reloading in the background. If you melee or switch weapons, it will cancel the auto reload.

BXB:
  1. Melee. Wait until you see their shields break, as soon as you do:
  2. Hit X and then immediately after hit B again. Do not hit them at the same time.

Notes:

  • BXB should only be done without a full clip. The second melee is faster this way. Try shooting at the opponent once just before the first melee if you have a full clip. Better yet if you already have a full clip, use the BXR!
  • To ensure you get a kill with only two melees, attempt to melee after jumping, while coming down from the highest point of your jump. This will deliver more damage than a normal melee while both members are on flat ground.
  • You can also continue the combo as needed. For example you may melee a third time by using BXBXB.
  • Alternatively to this combo, you can also use BYYB. This is where you melee, hit Y twice very fast (which will switch weapons back and forth once quickly) and melee again. This YY is your cancel in this case. Generally speaking, BXB is more effective.

Grenade Reload:
  1. Throw a grenade.
  2. During the animation of your Spartan throwing the grenade, hit X.

Notes:

  • You must be off host in order for this to work.
  • It should be obvious that this will only work if you do not have a full clip.
  •  I recommend hitting X two times quickly to ensure you get the reload, however if timed properly you need only to hit it once.
  • You may continue shooting while the reload is happening.

Please note that the next few button glitches are more advanced. It serves no real purpose to learn the following glitches unless you have a solid BR and can already perform the previously mentioned combos on the regular.

Double Shot:
  1. Hit R twice very fast. Rule of thumb is twice before you see the first shot.
  2. Hit X immediately after the second R.

Notes:

  • Performing this glitch will auto reload your BR, meaning you will not see the animation but your BR will reload. If you melee or switch weapons, it will cancel the auto reload.
  • A double shot followed by YY, followed by a second double shot is known as a quad shot and is a very fast way to kill your opponent if used correctly.

RRBX (BXR without a full clip):
  1. Hit R twice very fast. Rule of thumb is twice before you see the first shot.
  2. Step 2: Hit B immediately after the second R, and then X. Do not hit these last two at the same time.

Notes:

  • In most cases you will need a headshot in order to get an instant kill.
  • As with the BXR and BXB, you want to ensure you do not press the X button before the melee has time to register. Watch their shields for timing.
  • This is one of the harder button glitches in terms of timing.
  • You may also use RRBXR, which yields the exact same result. There is no advantage to this, but rather some people find it more intuitive due to the original BXR combo.
  •  Performing this glitch will auto reload your BR, meaning you will not see the animation but your BR will reload. If you melee or switch weapons, it will cancel the auto reload.

BXRRX:

At this point we are combining previously mentioned combos, but just in case you want that 6 bullet burst after your melee:

  1. Melee. Wait until you see their shields break, as soon as you do:
  2. Hit X, and then do a double shot (RRX)

Notes:

  • Not much else to say about this one. You’ll know if you have it right by how many bullets you shoot out, three or six.

XSV Shot: (BRX, RRX, BRX, RRX,...)
  1. Perform a BXR. Make sure you hit XR at the same time. In reality the combo is BRX, however if you hit XR at the same time it makes no difference.
  2. Immediately after the BXR, perform a double shot.
  3. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Notes:

  • This can only be performed off host.
  • The idea here is that BXR/BRX is giving you an auto reload while you are performing the double shot. This therefore enables you to reuse the same button combo over and over while maintaining a full clip/constantly reloading clip.

Halo 1 Button Glitches

Backpack reload:

  1. when a weapon can be reloaded, press reload twice fast.
  2. switch weapon.
  3. switch weapon again after the sound clip of the first gun reloading is completely finished.

Notes:

  • Obviously doesn't work with guns you cannot reload.
  • You can fire your entire clip, use this button combo to put your weapon away while you can shoot with your second gun. When that is empty, you can backpack reload again while you shoot with the gun that was backpack reloaded first, etc. You can pretty much keep shooting untill you run out of bullets.

Double Melee:

  1.  melee.
  2. throw a grenade.
  3. melee.

Notes:

  •  Use this up close.
  •  It isn't an instakill (unless the grenade explosion connects but that usually means you'll be blown up too), so be sure you've damaged your opponent.
  •  If you're not careful, you can blow yourself up with the grenade you threw.
  •  Alternatively, you can stick your opponent with this, or if you see the chance, double melee the opponent while sticking another.
