HYENA PRESENTS :: MASTERY :: THE FINAL MONTAGE

As expected this was impressive! Definitely had the Hyena feel to it. Creative and unique gameplay. Don't know if I like this better than Blizzard From the NetherWorld II tho, but that is one of my top 3 H3 vids. Got to thank you for all the numbered vids you have put out in recent time, I've enjoyed them a lot. Applause Hyena!
Bump.  Hyena Top 3 montage maker.   There, I said it.
Absolutely unbelievable. I don't even know where to start. I don't remember the last time a montage had me shouting no at my computer screen but I was for pretty much this entire video. There is no way half this stuff happened. Insane video, perfectly executed.
I downloaded it but it gave me like one second of video then it went blank...

Sounds like the download might not have finished completely and corrupt the file. You can always stream it here: http://www.thehaloforum.com/videos/mastery

Awesome montage,  those trick shots will keep in my mind forever, tnx hyena, for let us watch this thirst through ur eyes, all those trick kills were spontaneous and rlly natural, congrats for this epic montage.

I shared this video in some México Halo Groups, it blew their minds.

holy shit is all i have to say

thank you for the shout out, hyena, i really appreciate it.

but dear lord... i stopped studying for two hours to just watch this over and over again

We've chewed threw over 200gb of bandwidth from the custom stream for this video in 48 hours, equating to approximately 2,000 views!

Watched this the other day outside, with no sound, on my cellphone in the blaring sunlight.  Still loved every minute of it, amazing stuff man.  That Hyena HAble dual never happened, maybe one sneaky day... ;)

Amazing clips, friend.

Well, damn. I've had the username Mr Brightside for years but it won't let me sign in on the new site. frown

I don't think you can just sign in. I had to follow an email I got that invited me to migrate my account. Maybe try asking a mod to help if you didn't get an email?

holy balls

That was crazy. Those clips with the icicles were some of the sickest clips I've seen.  Sucks that the video was taken off youtube :/

This really lived up to my expectations and is a great way to go out :)

Wth I didn't see this yet. Downloading now. Can't wait.
Best halo video I've seen since 2010.  Incredible montage.

10/10
Whoa.... wut.. That gameplay was in-fucking-credible. I haven't said "HOLY SHIT!" out loud while watching a montage in literally years. Years.
any idea if this will be up for long inxy?

Yeah, it will stay up forever.
The original video says "Copyright claim by Studio Ghibli Inc".

The problem was simply the song in the credits.

I changed that  song to:

Oneohtrix Point Never - Remember
It's some obscure song from this ambient album I listen to:

It kinda gives me Hyena vibes.

I don't like what you changed it to. It's cool that you did it, but it doesn't fit the mood he wanted.

I think it fits fine but the only way it's staying on YouTube is if the last song gets changed. I'll take it down if Hyena has a problem with it.  Boards of Canada and Oneohtrix Point Never are essential ambient producers so I thought it went perfect with the BoC track used.

If Hyena still has the project file then he should rerender a YouTube version with a changed song because it doesn't belong on my channel anyways.
I just want it to be on YouTube bottom line.

I came.

Studio Ghibli is the shit by the way

I finally sat down to watch this thing with no distractions, full screen, alone in my apartment, and I have to say you really hit on  what makes montages special in a way that hasn't been done since Legacy. To me, the ultimate goal of a montage is to take a piece of your own experience and immortalize it and share it through a video. Very few montages manage to do this well because its incredibly difficult, and also because many have lost sight of this ultimate goal, imo anyway.

The intro, the perfectly placed bits of the Master talking, the music, everything just tied into showing us a piece of your experience with the game. It felt like a proper and truly personal goodbye from you to the community, and feels like such a beautiful testament to this site and the montagers that have come and gone.

I'm sure its partly because Halo is in such sorry shape right now, but watching this video makes me feel the way I did after Legacy - I feel genuinely sad that the chapter of Halo and the montage scene that your video is capturing is ending or over. It also makes me sad that I didn't join this site until 09.

All around just absolute 10/10 feel trip out of this one. Really shows you don't need insane 3D skillz to make a meaningful original video with an effective arc and theme. I hope this inspires people to do similar stuff.

Thanks for taking me on this trip man. Very very few videos can take me away like that.

I really don't think that's the ultimate goal all montage makers are aiming towards, but it is a very nice goal if you truly want to make something that will stand out and speak for itself, rather than blending in with the crowd. Some people just want to show off their gameplay purely because they feel like they can compete with the best, and that's completely fine with me, because I can put myself in that mindset and just enjoy the gameplay for what it's worth.

As Ruxs said in the Youtube comment section, comparing this video to a video like Apex isn't going to work. They are two completely different styles of the same game, both editing and gameplay wise. While Apex competes for the strongest gameplay category, period, Mastery not only shows ridiculous gameplay that is taken to a different dimension within the same game, but it also tells a story. That doesn't mean one of the videos is better than the other, that's all subjective, and should be up to the viewers to decide for themselves.  Comparing the two would be like looking at Look Before You Leap (trick jumping) and Orima (campaign), and saying that this one isn't as good because it lacks this and that. They are just not comparable.

edit: I also believe that's what the quote at the start from BullXRape is about.

Is that really a "montage" though? If all you want to do is to prove you have good gameplay? Because in my mind if that's your goal you may as well just put clips on the timeline to some music and call it a day. Maybe drag things around a tad to hit a couple easy sync points, but once you start adding in other things I think your goal has definitely expanded beyond just showing off your gameplay. Its funny you mention Ruxs because the gameplay in his video was kinda ruined for me by the editing. I think the goal of his video was definitely more than just proving he has good gameplay. Proving you have good gameplay is obviously a huge part of montages, but not necessarily the core aspect in my opinion.

There is of course some subjectivity to montages, in the way you mentioned: certain montages have certain things others don't. I wouldn't compare this video to something like Toasty M1 in terms of editing because that's not what the focus of this video is.

You pretty much said what I meant in your post; "if you truly want to make something that will stand out and speak for itself, rather than blending in with the crowd [make it capture a piece of your experience]". To me that's the essence of a montage, and I would argue that pretty much every one of the great montages has done that in some way, and I think the vast majority of montages have attempted to do it in at least some way, even if its just selecting music you like and thanking people who have helped you at the end in the credits.

Yo I mean who would just POP DOOP JUMP ON ICICLE QUICKSCOPE for an overkill....... regardless of what makes a montage  a montage this is just inhuman
I said "no way", "holy fucking shit", "no fucking way", and "what the fuck" more times than I remember for any recent video I have seen. Amazingly unique gameplay as always, and what a masterful way to go out. *Clap* Hyena, I'll always been a fan.

Halo 3's horrible. This montage is not.

Congratulations on hitting a homerun at your exit party, man. Despite my having to play catch up on all of your past releases, I am very glad that I fell under the "late" category rather than the "never". My favorite part of all... not the specific shots that you've managed to pull (despite them all being truly unique (and jawdropping)), but your confidence in battle. I love the fact that you're so comfortable sniping at such a high sensitivity - it's great. Being able to snipe and instantly whip your reticule into a different position looking for the next victim prior to the official medal displaying on screen is something I've always loved. Something that I feel I look for more than other people is mannerisms in play. The type of stuff I notice you doing has solidified my perception that you've genuinely got control over your snipe, much like another person would at 4-6 sensitivity.

I don't really have any additional thoughts that haven't already been said. You've done a great job. I hope you're able to incorporate the martial arts theme into future concepts because in my opinion, this was your most well polished in that area and I feel you can only continue to grow for the better here.

Great job, buddy.

I have not seriously enjoyed a Halo montage in years, but you just blew my mind. I've stuck around here for a while but I haven't played in about 2 years. This video just convinced me to start playing again, even if it's just for fun and maybe after all this time, it won't be fun anymore. But that's a risk I'll take.

I'm going to buy an Xbox and MCC tomorrow, whether its worth it or not. You've brought back that feeling of awe that I had watching montages years ago, for that I thank you.

your confidence in battle

Lol I totally agree. That shot right after lifting up the bubbleshield (which was hilarious btw) and instantly turning away with a melee like "yeah I got that", before the game even confirmed it, was awesome

video was crazy man, ive never seen anyone snipe nades/rockets like that before

Halo 3's horrible. This montage is not.

I agree with your whole post but this is the part I relate to.

I despise Halo 3 and I cant stand watching Halo 3 montages. I cant even remember the last Halo 3 video that I made it the whole way through. If I make it over a minute into your H3 video... kudos.

I watched this in its entirety and it was like i wasn't even watching Halo 3. That is how you know you got your own style.

Additionally, I think the whiplash breakneck tempo of his gameplay puts me in a place where I forget about Halo 3's natural terd turtle pace just long enough for me to enjoy the video.

2:25 -2:35

Does anyone else love seeing the elites die to that song playing? Favorite part of the video right there.

It makes me feel like I'm watching examples of animal dominance on natural geographic.
<3 <3 <3 <33333 can't even begin to explain the feels

I hope you didn't follow through man; I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an XB1 for the MCC until it is way, way more fixed.

@B cracks me up when peeps like you put down whichever Halo title with that level of arrogance. I mean, I hate Halo Reach and onwards, but if I watched such a montage and enjoyed it, you wouldn't catch me saying 'yo dawg the game you are playing is terrible' as a preface to my complimentary review, because I don't have a ridiculous video game superiority complex. Maybe you're actually (socially speaking) obtuse enough to be unaware of this, but saying shit like that seriously detracts from your positive review. If you say something like 'I normally don't like watching Halo 3, but this video is so good I forgot all about it' then yes, that's a compliment. When you act like your opinion on the game is anything other than an opinion, that's when you come off like a clown. Hyena clearly likes H3 enough to play it as much as he has, so what sort of message does it send when you pretentiously assert that the medium in which he has expressed his creativity is bad? You may think it makes your opinion about the montage even more impressive, but it doesn't. It just makes you sound foolish.

I agree with B.
