my brother's 9 and he's still into the idea of Santa Claus but, arguably worse, this Elf on a shelf stuff. I might've made a post about it a couple years ago, but I'm having trouble playing along at this point.
Santa was always an intangible force; revealing his inexistence makes for an easier processing over the fact. But this elf stuff is more real and interactive than Santa could ever be, even if you went to see the difference variations of Santa at the mall.
It seems cruel, but then maybe I just lost my magic... ;c

Sounds like the plot of a decent horror film
You've lost your magic. I believed until I was maybe 10, by putting the dots together eventually. I think elf on the shelf is fun even if you don't "believe" in the story behind it. It's essentially hide and seek, our elf just moves around and he looks for it each morning. You made your elf sound creepier than the book though lol-- juvenile story is the elf comes to visit and watches behavior all day and travels to the North Pole each night to report to Santa. He reappears somewhere new each time he travels so the kids believe he moved when they go to bed, etc. ~magic~
i do find it funny that my kid believes in Santa which is this great magical innocent and naive thing but his Christmas list consists of asking for black ops, shot guns, knives, and AK47's. -_-
